Wet yard, slow drains, sewage odors: what to do next

A septic system in trouble usually announces itself before the whole house is down. Surfacing over the field, backups, lush wet strips, gurgling drains, and a sewage smell that will not quit are the usual tells. This page helps you sort "call soon" from "stop using water and write now." It will not diagnose a failed drain field from your ZIP code.

Signs that need a truck

• Water surfacing over the drain field, especially a dark or soggy patch that stays after the rest of the yard dries.
• Sewage backing up into tubs, floor drains, or the lowest fixtures.
• Toilets that will not flush in more than one bathroom, or that gurgle when a washer drains.
• A lush, extra-green stripe over the field in a dry spell. Grass can look "healthy" when effluent is leaking near the surface.
• Sewage odor outdoors near the tank or field, or indoors that does not clear with a fan.
• Slow drains house-wide after laundry day, not one clogged sink.
• A pump alarm that keeps sounding on a pumped or ATU system.

One sluggish bathroom can be a household clog. Several fixtures plus a wet yard is the system talking.

What to do right now

Stop excess water. Do not keep flushing to see if it clears. Pause the washer and dishwasher. Keep people and pets off any wet ground over the field. Do not dump septic "reviver" chemicals into a tank that may already be in failure.

Full tank vs failed field

A tank that is overdue can mimic a field problem: sluggish fixtures, odor, water higher in the tank than it should be. Pumping fixes that when the field is still accepting water.
